Hello and welcome to Part 2 of this little series. You can check out Part 1 right here. I’ve barely scratched the surface of Finland’s raging rock and metal talent but I will certainly try, so hang on tight and read on!
These guys sing in their native tongue which I seriously wish more Finnish bands would do! Founded in 1991 when the chaps were still in their teens, their’s is a grungy, heavy rock style punctuated by Toni Wirtanen’s distinctive vocals and I’m super thrilled to be going to see them live in Finland next year! I can’t even remember exactly when I got into them and how, but being their fan just seems like the most natural thing in the world, they’re a kick ass band! A good place to start is with their album Kiila. It’s one of my absolute favourites and the track Armo still remains one of my favourite songs EVER.
Introducing pure Finnish, fast-paced power metal from Kemi in Finland! Tony Kakko has the most beautiful voice and that, combined with mega talented musicians, this band is a true credit to the metal world.
The 69 Eyes
Formed in 1990 and fondly known as the Helsinki Vampires by us fans, the 69 Eyes is a tasty combination of glam and gothic rock. Fronted by the sexy and charisma infused Jyrki, his deep, rich, vocals beautifully compliment the inky dark, vampire themes. They expertly deliver everything from energetic guitar riffs to heart rending ballads.
These guys are a fabulous glam rock band formed by Archie Kuosmanen and Johnny Parkkonen, and, let’s just say, they’ve certainly been through their fair share of drummers!
Fronted by the talented and highly charismatic Ville Valo, HIM is also one of the bands I got into very early on. I bought And Love Said No.. The Best Of HIM 1997-2004, mainly because I thought Ville Valo was hot (yeah, I know!), not knowing that they would, in later years, grow so close to my heart. I must admit, I didn’t “get” HIM at all to begin with, Love Metal was something totally foreign to me, but I knew it was totally unique. And it still is. Nobody does Love Metal like Ville Valo. He invented it after all.
Ensiferum (which means sword bearing in Latin – how apt!) are a Finnish folk metal band formed in 1995 in Helsinki by guitarist Markus Toivonen, drummer Kimmo Miettinen, and bassist Sauli Savolainen.
Look out for Part 3!
