A recent study by The Doherty Institute and University of Melbourne sheds new light on an innovative solution that is showing remarkable promise in curbing the spread of this devastating illness.
The researchers’ auto-dissemination stations targeted breeding sites around homes, using small pools of water as bait to lure female mosquitoes into black plastic containers. These containers were coated with a slow-acting larvicide powder that killed off mosquito larvae across entire neighborhoods. By suppressing the insect population, residents in areas with traps experienced an 83 percent decrease in the likelihood of contracting Buruli ulcer compared to those in unprotected zones.
The trial’s most striking feature was not just the significant drop in mosquito egg counts after eight weeks – 70 percent fewer eggs were found – but also the actual impact on human cases. Reducing mosquito populations could significantly reduce the risk of infection, a crucial finding given that Buruli ulcers can take months to develop after a person is bitten.
According to Dr Véronique Paris, “We don’t have to kill all mosquitoes, that’s not the message.” Instead, it’s about controlling them with simple measures, such as using insect repellent or covering water tanks. By adopting basic mosquito control measures at a community level, even Professor Tim Stinear believes that public health officials can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
The study has far-reaching implications for residents living in high-risk areas and public health officials alike. Director of the Western Public Health Unit Dr Finn Romanes notes that Buruli ulcer infections have skyrocketed 350 percent over the past five years in north-west and western suburbs, with high-risk areas now numbering 14, up from just 12 last year. “We still don’t know how it first got here,” he says, “but it’s clear that it’s spreading from possums through mozzies to humans.”
As we enter the riskiest months for transmission, residents in affected areas would do well to heed Dr Romanes’ advice: ask your doctor for a swab test if you notice a non-healing sore. And for health officials, this study offers a moment of opportunity – a chance to rethink our approach and prioritize prevention over treatment.
