Australia Demands ‘High Bar’ for Data Centres Seeking Fossil Fuel Power

Australia’s federal government has set its sights on keeping data centres in line with its ambitious renewable energy targets, which is a move that should be welcomed. The boom in these high-intensity computing facilities presents a double-edged sword – while they promise to drive innovation and economic growth, they also pose a significant threat to Australia’s climate goals.

The recent deal struck between state and federal energy ministers may seem like a compromise, but it’s actually a necessary step towards preserving the country’s progress in renewable energy. The industry’s peak body, Data Centres Australia, has warned that Australia risks losing investment if it can’t deliver clean, firmed power at the same pace as the global market. According to Climate Council chief executive Amanda McKenzie, “Australia has one shot at getting this right.” We must ensure that our policies support the growth of the data centre industry while also driving down emissions and promoting a cleaner energy mix.

The federal government’s compromise may seem like a step back from its initial commitment to strict regulations, but it’s actually an opportunity for Australia to set a global precedent. By establishing a single national framework that balances economic growth with climate goals, we can demonstrate our leadership in this area and inspire other countries to follow suit.
