Culture Club Live & Loving A Band From The 80’s

Hello friends!

It’s been a dream of mine for a long while to see Culture Club and Boy George, and on Saturday my dream came true! I went to see them on the 5th September at the Eventim Apollo in Hammermith, London.

It was also Freddie Mercury’s birthday on the 5th September so it was a like a celebration in his honour! As Boy George said as he was mincing around onstage, “We all need a bit of Freddie in our lives!”

There are a couple of downfalls to loving a band from the 80’s, like the fact that a lot of the time, the bands are either inactive or, well, deceased. Luckily, Culture Club are neither, and all four original members, Boy George, Mikey Craig, Jon Moss, and Roy Hay, were there!

They burst onstage with Church of the Poison Mind, Boy George coming out last to an enormous roar from the audience! The show was a lovely cocktail of new songs and old classics, including my own super favourite, Miss Me Blind, which I was praying they would play, and I think my heart nearly exploded when they did!

Boy George went for several outfit changes and several extravagant headdresses, unfortunately I was too far away to get any good photos, but even from where I was, I knew he was fabulous. I mean, obviously, right?

The encore was fantastic! They mixed it up with More Than Silence (can we purleeeeease get that new album, already?), Karma Chameleon (OF COURSE!), Bang a Gong, and finally *drumroll, please* David Bowie’s Starman!!! As if it wasn’t a historical night already, this just made it extra, extra special! And you know what, George’s version was JUST AS epic as Bowie’s. It’s making my head spin just thinking about it again!

I loved the fact that, not only is George a charismatic and energetic frontman, he also interacted a lot with the audience and spoke to everyone with jokes and little tidbits about the band!

At one point he said, “Never be afraid to get sentimental. I cry about everything, even TV adverts make me cry! My mother used to say women live longer because they cry. You can really let yourself go at a Culture Club concert!”

Setlist:

  • Church of the Poison Mind
  • It’s a Miracle
  • I’ll Tumble 4 Ya
  • Like I Used To
  • Everything I Own (Bread cover)
  • Let Somebody Love You
  • Black Money
  • Victims
  • Move Away
  • Human Zoo
  • Time
  • The Crying Game (Dave Berry cover)
  • Different Man
  • Miss Me Blind
  • Runaway Train
  • Do You Really Want to Hurt Me

Encore:

  • More Than Silence
  • Karma Chameleon
  • Bang A Gong, Get It On (T Rex Cover)
  • Starman (David Bowie cover)

All in all, an EPICALLY epic night, and worth every second of the wait! Until next time, eh?

Namaste,

Amanda x

Really epic, like you said, I watched his interview once and I liked him very much! And wow, yes, the 4 members there, so cool! He is right – I also cry about everything 🙂 and I am not ashamed of that! I know some of their songs, so I am sure it was such a great event! I would have loved being there!

Oh, it sounds like you had an incredible time! Wow! I’ve heard about Boy George and the Culture Club, even though I’m all the way in Borneo and born in the 90s. Hahaha, it’s must have been an incredible experience to watch them perform! ❤

Sounds like an amazing experience Amanda. There’s something special about seeing a band you really love isn’t there! I love Boy George, his personality and fashion is so original! Glad you had fun!

Absolutely, seeing a band you love really is special, it’s why I don’t really go to gigs unless it’s a band I love 🙂 yes, Boy George has a style that is all his own, bless him, love that man! Thanks for stopping by, Lucy 🙂 x

Thanks, Vanisha! Yes, he has a lot of philosophies like that 🙂 glad you liked the Instagram pics, it was so difficult to narrow it down to just a few videos lol, it didn’t seem to do the experience justice! x

I was born in 1989 but I love music from the 80s! Sounds like it was a fun concert. I know what you mean about the downfalls of liking a band from the 80s — my favourite is The Cure. I was fortunate enough to see them live in 2008 but they haven’t had many concerts since then. My tip is to go whenever you can because you never know!

You’re nearly the same age as me, I was born in 1988 🙂 that’s exactly what I think, too, Eden, that’s why I plan to go whenever Culture Club or Boy George are on tour! The Cure is a great band too, it must have been cool to see them live 🙂 x

  10. Ohhh, so nice you’ve had a memorable night, Amanda! My fave was “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”. Just recently I’ve heard on the radio that George becomes a DJ as well? He is such a versatile artist. Do you remember him in the series A-Team? I madly loved this episode with Boy George. ❤ Thank you so much for your incredible comments, my dear! I deeply appreciate them!!! Hugs! ;-*
