While the majority of rock bands are fronted by men, I want to give a shoutout to all the kick-ass women in the world of metal and rock, too, and here are a few of my favourites.
Brody Dalle
If Brody Dalle has proven anything, it’s that she is a survivor. When the Distillers broke up, she was seriously hooked on meth to the point that it nearly killed her. She cleaned up her act and went on to create more awesome music, and being better and bolder than ever. She’s definitely one of the greatest punk icons of our time. What a woman!
Lzzy Hale
It took less than 10 seconds for me to become totally hooked on Halestorm after hearing Lzzy sing. Some bands and musicians kinda grow on you over time, but this was love at first listen! I love it when that happens. I absolutely adore the raunchy, rock ‘n’ roll sound she bring to the band, and, in my opinion, she is definitely one of the greatest female rock stars of our time. She is unbelievably talented, and she can do things with her voice that other singers can only fantasize about. This woman ROCKS.
Amy Lee
I truly think Amy has the most beautiful voice in the world. Evanescence is one of the bands I got into in my teens, and of course I started with the unbeatable Fallen album. I remember singing along to the lyrics in front of a mirror! She’s the Princess of Goth, and nobody does haunting and plaintive quite like Amy.
Avril Lavigne
Listening to Avril always makes me feel chirpy, it’s like hanging out with a gal pal and just letting it all out! She’s the ultimate rock princess, and she has just grown so much as a person as well as musically. I love that she just won’t take crap from anyone, and that she’s also such an avid campaigner. Rock on, sister!
Shirley Manson
I do wish Garbage would do just one more tour in the UK, but I’m quite happy listening to their old records on repeat and reminicing! I truly admire and love Shirley Manson, not just for her talent, but the fact that she stood up to the record labels that were trying so hard to mould her into something she wasn’t, and she has never been afraid to do her own thing. She has always remained true to herself despite whatever hardship she had to face, and she remains one of my all time favourite rock icons!
Tarja Turunen
Tarja has always been a role model for me, I still remember a quote from a Kerrang! interview where she said, with total dignity “I am not a rock bitch, I am a lady”, and I’ve loved and respected her ever since. She will always be the voice of Nightwish to me, and nobody can replace her, and she blew us all away with her solo albums, which definitely give the Nightwish chaps a run for their money! I especially love her album My Winter Storm.
Who’s your favourite rock chick?
Rock on!
Amanda
I love Tarja, I’ve been to one of her concerts and I had a “trash the dress” photo shoot in a wedding dress inspired by her album Winter storm.

Awesome list! I grew up listening to Avril Lavigne and Amy Lee. I also LOVE Lzzy Hale; the latest Halestorm CD has been in my car since I bought it, haha. Halestorm actually went on tour with one of my other favorite bands, The Pretty Reckless (which includes another favorite rock chick of mine, Taylor Momsen), so I was disappointed that the dates/locations didn’t work for me.
I’ll definitely be checking out the other singers on this list that I haven’t heard of; I love finding new rock music to listen to. π
